Did you know you can see Broadway shows in Toledo, Ohio?

I did not know it until I received the pamphlet from Theater League about Stranahan Theater in mail after I went to New York this summer to see the Broadway show, Memphis (this is a good show).  What?  Stranahan Theater in Toledo, Ohio?  I had never heard of it until then. The brochure listed the Broadway shows that are coming to the theater in the coming year (see below).

ってことを知ってる人は、意外に少ないだろう。かくいう自分も、今年まで全く知らなかった一人。何故、このtheater のことを知ったかというと、この夏に久しぶりに（数年ぶりに）ニューヨークのブロードウエイに行ったのだが、その後、Broadway.comから盛んにPRのＥメールが来るようになり、加えてある日、Theater Leagueというところから、オハイオ州トレドにあるストラナハンシエター（Stranahan Theater）でのBroadway showsへのご案内のパンフレットが郵便で送られてきたのだ。 え、ストラナハンシエター?   トレド、オハイオ? 一体なんのこと？　と、パンフレットをよく見ると、

I knew Broadway comes to Detroit often, but never knew that they also come to Toledo, Ohio.  Looks like the above shows are not coming to the theaters in Detroit.  Apparently they schedule the shows so that they will not come to both Detroit and Toledo in the same year (The shows coming to Detroit over the next year are Mary Poppons, Grease, In The Heights, etc) .  The pamphlet from Theater League made me very curios what the Stranahan Theater is like, so I went to the Chorus Line on Oct 30 (Sat) with my friends.

デトロイトにブロードウエイがよく来ることは知っていたが、上記のショーはデトロイトには今後一年は来ないようだ。(デトロイトに来る予定は、メアリーポピンズ、グリース、インザハイツ等）デトロイトとオハイオがだぶらないよう、うまくスケジュールしてあるのだろう。
で、どんなシアターなのか好奇心もあり、10月30日（土）、コーラスラインを友人と３人で見に行ってきた。

Chorus LIne is an old show (1975 -); it’s one of the longest-running shows.  It is a very classical Broadway show with classical choreography and music, I think. It’s not really my cup of tea – at some points it got a little boring and made me sleep (sorry for the performers!  I know they were working very hard).  Classical shows like this may be a little boring for young generations now – even I (being not young) prefer more contemporary shows with hip-hop styles, for example.  But it was very interesting to see what a classical long-run show is like.  For somebody who loves classical Broadway, Chorus Line must be a fabulous show to watch.

コーラスラインは古い作品なので（1975年初演の最もロングランのショーのひとつ）、踊りの振り付け等、古典的ミュージカル、といった感じで、今の時勢ではちょっと退屈な感じがしないでもない（もっと新しい作品のショーには、ヒップホップ等が取り入れられていて、もっと目が覚める感じ（笑）で、個人的好みとしては自分は新しいショーの方がいい）。

途中で少々眠くなってしまったのだが、でも、古典的ブロードウエイがこういうもの、ということを見れる点では面白いと思った。途中で眠くなるとは失礼千万で申し訳ないが、古典的ショーが好きな方には、たまらなくスバラシいショーだろうと思う。

You can say the theater in Toledo supplements for Detroit, or vice versa – if you go to both, you will be able to cover a lot of shows (if you have money and time).

トレドのシエターは、デトロイトの補充をしてくれるようなものだ。つまり、デトロイトとオハイオの両方に行けば、たくさんのショーを網羅できるってこと（お金と時間さえあれば！）

Many mature ladies – probably because the show is a classical and old one?   高齢の女性が目につくが、たぶん古いショーのためか？

In general there is very small male audience in theaters for musicals, ballet, and dance.  Too bad there is the established image in the U.S. that men who like these things are likely to be gays.  It did not help, either, that it was an October Saturday that day – many American men are watching football either at home on TV or in a stadium.

ミュージカルやバレエ、ダンス等は、だいたい男性客が少ないものだが、「ダンスや歌が好きな男はゲイ（ホモ）の男」というイメージが米国で定着してしまったこともあり、男性は（内心は実は好きでも）体裁もあり、あまり来たがらないのかも？（さらに、この日は10月の土曜日。大抵の男性は家またはスタジアムでアメフト観戦をしているのだった。）

When I went to see Memphis in NY, it was the Shubert Theater.  In the back of the Shubert Theater, they sell alcohol in the back of the . You can watch the show drinking cocktail!  On the other hand, in Stranahan Theater, they sell only cookies, potato chips, juice, coke, and water.  I did not want any of them.  You could bring snack in your pocket if you want.  Nobody checks inside your purse/bag at the entrance – what a peaceful town Toledo is.  The rest room is very clean, roomy, and nice.  I give 100 of 100 points on the rest room.

NYのシエターではアルコールを売っていて、お酒を飲みながらショーを見れるが、ここは、ホールで売ってるのはクッキーやチップとジュース、コーラ、お水だけ。スナックをバッグやポケットにしのばせて行っても、入場時にバッグ内の検査など何もしないから、誰も分からないなあ。ああ、平和なオハイオの町！
おトイレは、とても広く清潔。評価満点。

You are not allowed to take photos of the show inside the theater.  So no photos of the show.  I could take only a few photos of the building because we made it there just in time for the show.

It’s not easy to be in Broadshow business, is it?  They have to travel around and perform in a Midwest town like Toledo Ohio (sorry, Toledo residents!)  Broadway is after all entertainment for the mass, as some people say, but it sure is fun to go see it, especially with your good friends.  I do not deny that entertainment for the mass is a lot of fun, and I do belong to the mass (a lot of time).

If you want to see something more artistic, the Univ of Michigan Music Society (UMS) offers it in Ann Arbor.  Detroit also hosts symphony orchestras, opera, ballet from Moscow, etc.

しかしまあ、Broadwayも、こんな中西部の田舎町（トレドの住民の方、失礼）にまで巡業（ドサ回り）に来なければならないのだから、ほんとにご苦労様、だ。
Broadwayは、「あんなもの大衆向けさ」と言われれば、それはほんとにそうなのだが、でも、大衆向けの娯楽は楽しい。

もっと芸術的なものを見るなら、Ann Arborのミシガン大学のUMS (University Musical Society) があるし、デトロイトにも交響楽団やバレー団なども来る。

気のおけない友達と一緒に（または一人でも）気軽に楽しくお遊びに出かけるなら、やはり大衆娯楽だ！

Finally, how to get to Stranahan Theater:

Its address: 4645 Heatherdown Blvd#2, Toledo, OH 43614

I take US-23 southbound, as I live in Ann Arbor.  Merge into I-475.  Google Map said exit at 13 and take 20, but I somehow missed the exit 13, too busy chatting with my friends.  I got the map from AAA Michigan – a great map – according to this map, it may be better to get off at Exit 8 instead and take 2 and then 20 (both are city roads).

I strongly recommend you carry a paper map of Toledo in case you get lost – it’s kind of tricky.  For me who live in Ann Arbor and my friends who live close to Ann Arbor,  going to Toledo is not much different from going to downtown Detroit (for both it’s one-hour drive one way).  If you live in the eastern part of metro-Detroit, you will take I-75 southbound to go to Toledo.  You may think it does not make sense to skip Detroit and go to Toledo all the way because you could just go to Detroit.  But Toledo offers shows that are not going to come to Detroit – at least not anytime soon.  If you live in metro-Detroit, Toledo is close enough for a one-day trip, so Broadway in Toledo will be a nice addition to your entertainment schedule.

さて、ストラナハンシエターへの行き方だが：

私の場合、アナーバーよりUS-23号線をまっすぐ南下してゆく。途中からI-475線へ。
グーグルマップ(Google Map) では、Exit 13で20号線（市街地路）へ、とあったが、友人２人とおしゃべりに夢中だったせいか、Exit 13を逃してしまった。
でも地図をよく見ると、Exit ８で下りて２号線（市街地路）-> 20号線（市街地路）の方がよいのでは、と思われる。

Exit をミスったりした場合のために、トレド市の地図を持って行くことをお勧めする。
私（と友人）の場合はアナーバー近辺在住なので、片道1時間ほどで、デトロイトに行くのとあまり変わらない。
デトロイト方面に住んでいる人は、I-75号線を南下することになるが、デトロイトのシエターの方がずっと近いから、トレドまでわざわざ行く意味がちょっと薄れるが、でも、デトロイトでカバーされないミュージカルを見たいなら、気軽に日帰りで行けるし、やはりトレドはおススメである。

Very spacious parking lots – best of all, it’s free    広い駐車場。無料。

If you want to go to one of the theaters in Detroit, you will have to pay for parking and you will have to be very careful driving.  Being not the most skillful and fearless driver, I am always at least somewhat nervous to drive in Detroit.  Many women are, just like me – sorry Detroit, but it’s true.  If you want to attract women, make the city safe and clean.  On the other hand, it’s pretty relaxing to drive in Toledo to/from Stranahan Theater, especially on a weekend – very spacious, wide roads, big parking lots.  If you are an urban person, Toledo may not be somewhere you want to go all the way, but we don’t have any big urban cities anywhere near here, anyway, so I may as well go to easy-going and safe Toledo – many of Asian immigrants like me are from big cities in Asia and those who ended up living in Midwest like Michigan often lament that there are no big cities anywhere nearby we can go to on a one-day trip.   Detroit?   Nope!

シエターの場所が安全な郊外の雰囲気なので、リラックスできるといえばそうだし、都会的雰囲気を吸いたい人には物足らないとも言える（デトロイトに行ったってどれだけ都会的な気分になれるかは疑問だが）。

How much it cost:

This time we paid for the seat $29.25/each plus the processing fee $4.50.  We three of us split the processing fee, so it actually was $29.25 + $1.5 = $30.75/person.  Plus gasoline  Very affordable.  (did not use even one-fourth of the tank for a round-trip between Ann Arbor and Toledo)

But this $29.25 was for the worst seats.  Those promotional phrases such as Special Pre-Sale Offer, Pre-Season Sale gave me a wrong impression that they would give us good seats for just $29.25 – I got annoyed but when my friend said “Oh well, you will get what you pay for”, I calmed down.  Did I just misunderstand those promotional phrases?  I sometime do that because English is my second language – I miss very subtle nuance, still now, after having lived in the U.S. for 25 years.  Anyway even the worst seats are not bad at all in Broadway theaters because Broadway theaters are small.  We could see the show pretty well.  If you are willing to pay $53, you can get a lot better seat. For me and many of my friends, the difference between $53 and $29.25 is pretty big.

It’s great that I we don’t have to go to New York to see Broadway.  Life in somewhere like Michigan gets pretty boring for people who grew up in a big city , probably more for women than men. It is really great that we can enjoy urban entertainment like Broadway in a safe town like Toledo, without spending a lot of money.

我々は３人で行ったので、プロセス料金$4.50 を３人で分けて、$1.50／人$29.25 + $1.50 = $30.75  と、もっと安くなった。
これはおトク　これにガソリン代を加えても、大した金額にならない。（アナーバーから往復でガソリンはタンク４分の１も使わなかった）
ただし、このお値段では良い席はもらえない。我々があてがわれた席は、最後部席だった。
Special Pre-Sale Offerだの、Pre-Season Saleだの、まるでメンバーオンリーの特別安料金で良い座席を買えるようなうたい文句のEメールにつられて８月にチケットを買ったのだが、結局は、安い値段相応のうしろーの席をくれただけだったので、annoyingではあったが、友人の「Oh well, you will get what you pay for」との言葉に「確かにそりゃーそうだ」と納得。
もっと良い席に座りたいなら、お値段は、$53.25、$58.25 （プラスprocessing fee) となる。
Broadwayの劇場は、こじんまりとしてあまり大きくないのが普通だから、最後部席でも十分楽しめる。今回も、ショーは十分によく見え、よく聞こえ、最後部席でも十分満足だった。53ドル払えばもうちょっと前の席に座れるのだろうが、53ドルと30ドルの心理的負担の違いは（私や友人には）結構大きい。
お金に余裕のある方は$58.25 払って良い席を。私と同類（あまりお金を使いたくない、and/or あまりお金がない）方は、30ドル払って後ろの席を。どちらでも、十分に楽しめます。
ニューヨークまで行かなくてもBroadwayを見れるのは、これはありがたいこと。ミシガンやオハイオ（に限らず中西部）の生活は、とかく女性にとって退屈ですからね。こういうことでもして、（あまりお金を使わずに）メリハリをつけよう。

On our way home, we stopped by at Hometown Buffet (5259 Airport Hwy, Toledo, OH; in the strip mall at the intersection of 20 and 2) for light supper.  It was $9.99 for as much as we wanted. We planned to eat lunch before the show, but we could not as we got lost and made it to the show just in time. The show started at 2pm, ended at 4pm.  We ate at 4:30pm. We were hungry – we ate like horses.  From the mall, we got on 2, drove westbound and then soon got onto US-23.  This means next time we should get off US-23 here (exit 8), go eastbound on 2, then the strip mall where this Buffet is should be on the right side.  Lunch is offered through 3 pm for only $4.99.  Sounds like a lot of P.R. of this restaurant?   If you want to eat more near the theater, there is Sebastianos, right across Heatherdown Blvd. from the theater.  Highly recommend that you leave your home early enough so you will have time to eat before the show  (as I said, in the theater they sell only cookies, chips, candies, water).

If you want to go to Stranahan Theater in winter, please drive carefully.  I am not going until next spring.  I never can get used to driving on snow and ice.  I grew up in a much warmer place where it seldom snowed – when it snowed it was only flurry.

帰りに、Hometown Buffetというレストランで軽い夕食を取る。
夕食のお値段は$9.99で、食べ放題。ほんとは、ショーの前にランチを取るつもりだったのだが、ショー開演にぎりぎりに駆けつけたので、この日は空腹を我慢して観劇するはめに。ショーは２時開演、終了が４時頃。食べたのが４時半くらい。友人と３人で思い切り、馬のように食べた  (eat like a horse – これ、英語の表現の直訳。。）。
Hometown Buffetの場所は:5259 Airport Hwy, Toledo, OH 20号線と２号線の交差点にあるストリップモールにある。
帰りだったので、20号線を北上してここで夕食、食事後モールから２号線に出て西に向かうとすぐにUS-23へのランプがあり、便利。今度来る時は、US-23をExit 8で下りて２号線に出、東に向かってこのHometown Buffetにショー前に寄り、ランチを取りたいと思う。なんせ、ランチは$4.99 で食べ放題だから（ランチは３pmまで）。
なんか、Hometown BuffetのすごいPRになってしまったが、シエターのすぐ傍にもSebastianos　というレストランがある。（シエターから道路 (Heatherdowns Blvd) をはさんですぐ向かい側）
ショーの前に軽食などできる時間があるよう、早めに出発することをおススメします。

ただし、冬にトレドまで観劇に行くのはどんなもんでしょうかねえ。雪、氷の中をわざわざトレドまで運転してまで行きたいものかどうかは、各個人が決めることですね。（雪、氷雨の運転を嫌う自分は、春になるまで行きませ〜ん）　もし冬にショーを見に行くことにしたあなた、くれぐれも、お気をつけて行ってらっしゃい。
