デトロイトタイガース、ワールドシリーズに出るも、惜しくも優勝逃がす！

でも、ワールドシリーズに出るほど強くなったのだ、文句は言うまい。90年代はひどく低迷していたのだが、2006年、2012年と最近２度もワールドシリーズに出場するようになった。すばらしいことだ！

It’s so heartbreaking that the Detroit Tigers lost all the games to San Francisco Giants in in the World Series.  But I should be very happy that the Tigers made it to the World Series twice in recent years, in 2006 and this year.  I remember the recent dry decade – they stunk pretty bad throughout the 1990s.

そして、今年のタイガースのスターの一人、プリンス・フィールダー(Prince Fielder)。

彼のお父さんはセソ・フィールダー（Cecil Fielder： Cecil は「セシル」とは発音しない。「セソ」の方が近い)。お父さんのセソは、90年代初め、タイガースの大スターだった。

セソは、阪神タイガースにいたこともある（1989年）。

わあ、日本のタイガースと米国のタイガースの両方にいたなんて！

阪神タイガースのファンたち、セソを覚えてくれているのでしょうか？

Prince reminds me of his dad, Cecil Fielder, who was on the Tigers in the 1990s.  Cecil was a slugger and a huge star. I am sure I am not the only one who remembers Cecil when seeing Prince play on the same team as his dad and in the same position as his dad (the first base). Cecil played in Japan in 1989; he was on the Hanshin Tigers in Osaka. Hanshin Tigers fans are famous for being really crazy about the team.  I wonder how many of the fans remember Cecil.  What a coincidence that Cecil played on both the U.S. Tigers and the Japanese Tigers 🙂

プリンスは一塁手。お父さんのセソも一塁手だった。

プリンスを見ていると、20年前のお父さんの姿が重なって見えて、嗚呼、感無量。

Prince looks a lot like his dad.  I remember the days 20 years ago I went to the old Tigers stadium (the current stadium is new; the old stadium was demolished) with my family and watched Cecil play.

お父さんのセソは1990年、51本のホームランを打つという大快挙を成し遂げた。息子のプリンスも、2007年(Milwaukee Brewers時代）、50本のホームランを打ち、お父さんと肩を並べた。

Cecil hit 51 home runs in 1990.  That was huge. Prince joined the club when he hit 50 home runs in 2007 when he was on the Brewers.

でも、悲しいかな、この親子は口もきかないほど仲違いしているのだ。

But oh how sad – the father and the son have been estranged.

理由は、お父さんのギャンブル中毒。ビジネス事業への投資の失敗もある。セソはせっかく何千万ドルも稼ぎながら、その全てを失ってしまった。そんな父親を見て息子は怒るよね、やっぱり。（「金は天下の回りもの」というが、ほんとに。。。）

プリンスが子供の時、セソはよくプリンスを自分の試合に連れて来ていた。お父さんの試合を観戦しているプリンスの姿がTVに映っていたものだ。

The reason was Cecil was addicted to gambling and made poor decision in business investment. He lost all the money he made. Any son would be furious and would not want to talk to his dad, I guess. I have heard so many stories about people who made fortunes and lost all in only one or two generations.  It is not easy to manage and preserve wealth.

When Prince was a kid, Cecil used to bring him often to the clubhouse.  I remember TV was showing Prince watch his dad play.

私の勤めていたデトロイト近郊の某会社の式典に、セソとプリンスの親子が招待されたことがあった。セソのサイン会が式典後に開かれたが、サインに忙しいお父さんの横にプリンスがちょこなんと座っていて、とてもかわいかったのを覚えている。

One time, Cecil and Prince came to my company in the metro Detroit. The company I worked for at that time had a corporate ceremony and they invited Cecil and Prince as the guests for the ceremony. After the ceremony, there was a long line for Cecil’s autograph.  Prince was sitting next to Cecil.  He was very cute.

1992年には、マクドナルドのCMに親子で出た。その映像がYouTubeに載っている。In 1992, Cecil and Prince were in McDonald’s commercial. It’s in YouTube.  My sons loved the commercial.  I am sure a lot of kids went to McDonald’s more thanks to the commercial.

タイガースは1984年にもワールドシリーズに出たのだが、その時は優勝した。80年代はタイガースはとても強く、タイガースの黄金時代と呼ばれている。その時代の英雄達は、名コーチの故スパーキー・アンダーソン（Sparky Anderson）, 名投手ジャック・モリス（Jack Morris ：彼の息子はなんとMIT（マサチューセッツ工科大学）に行った*o*)、Alan Trammelなどなど)。

The Tigers played the World Series back in 1984 and won the championship then. 1980s were the golden age for the Tigers. The heros in the 1980s includes the late legendary coach, Sparky Anderson, the great pitcher, Jack Morris (his son went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, by the way *o*), Alan Trammel, Lou Whitaker, etc.

そのもっと昔の1968年にもワールドシリーズで優勝。その時の名キャッチャーはビル・フリーハン（Bill Freehan）。フリーハン氏は、90年代にミシガン大学野球部のヘッドコーチを務め、毎年夏には少年野球キャンプを開いていた。うちの息子達も毎年そのキャンプに行ったものです。その時のスナップを一枚。

Prior to that, the Tigers won the World Series in 1968. Mr. Bill Freehan, the best catcher of the major league in 1968, was one of the stars on the Tigers then. He was the head coach of the U of M baseball team in the 1990s. He offered the youth baseball camp in every summer and my two sons attended it for a few years. My sons had great fun.  Here is the photo of one of my sons with Bill Freehan (I erased my son’s face, but did not erase Mr. Freehan’s.  Oh, he is a public figure. It’s OK, isn’t it?).  Freehan was a star long before my sons were born, but they sure respected Freehan and were excited to be near him.

息子の顔を公開すると怒られそうなので、顔をerase。フリーハン氏はどうせpublic figureだから、このままでいいでしょう。

タイガースのワールドシリーズ出場は、20世紀初頭にまで遡る。

タイ・カッブ（Ty Cobb）という有名な選手がいた時代。1907〜1909年には３年連続ワールドシリーズに出ている。日本はまだ明治時代の話。タイ・カッブ（Ty Cobb）を知らない米国の野球少年はまずいないだろう。それくらい伝説的な選手がデトロイトタイガースにいた。だから、タイガースは、歴史的な由緒のあるチームなのであーる！

Actually the Detroit Tigers made it to the World Series many times before 1968. Early in the 1900s were the time the famous Ty Cobb was on the Tigers. Tigers played the World Series for 3 years in a row, from 1907 to 1909.  Any American boy should know Ty Cobb. If you are an immigrant like me, did you know about Ty Cobb and the past glory of the Tigers? Immigrants like me often don’t know what we have around us are actually very historic.

野球をしない国から来た人たち（ヨーロッパ人、インド人、アフリカ人など）は、野球なんて全然面白くない、とブーブー言う。野球はたぶん、それに親しんで育たないと面白いと感じにくいスポーツなのだろう。

Those who came to the U.S. from the countries where baseball is not played (Europeans, Indians, Africans, etc) often find baseball totally boring.  I heard them complain, “I can’t stand baseball!  I don’t understand at all what’s interesting/exciting about it”.  You probably have to grow up with baseball to be able to appreciate the fun of it.

私は特に野球ファンではなかったけど、それでも野球に囲まれた環境で育ったから、自然に野球になじんだ。そういう日本人、多いだろうと思う。私の父はいつもプロ野球をTVで見ていたし、弟は「巨人の星」のマンガを全巻持っていたので、それを読ませてもらって、ずいぶんと野球に詳しくなったものだ（若い人たち、「巨人の星」って知ってるかな）。だから、ゲームをだいたい理解できるから、プロ野球を見るのは結構好き。

I was not a baseball fan, but I grew up in the very baseball-friendly environment. Baseball was very popular in Japan when I was a kid (and it still is). My father used to watch pro baseball games on TV all the time. My brother collected the entire set of the baseball manga (anime), “Kyojin-no-Hoshi” (it means the Star of Giants), which was enormously popular in Japan in 1960s-70s.  I read all of my brother’s manga books and became pretty knowledgeable of baseball. Thanks to that, I can understand baseball games pretty well and can enjoy watching the MLB games here in the U.S.  It’s not only me. Many Japanese are very familiar with baseball, so many of Japanese who live in the U.S. enjoy the Major League Baseball.  Very lucky!
