サウスヘイブン(South Haven)、ミシガン湖のビーチタウン。そのビーチは美しく、ミシガン人にとって、サウスヘイブンは夏のトップリゾートだ。

South Haven – it has one of the best Lake Michigan beaches. It’s a top-level summer resort in the Lake Michigan region.  People come to South Haven for a vacation and a weekend getaway from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and other parts of Michigan.

車を停めることができる道路は、ビーチより一段高い土地にある（これも砂丘なのだろう、きっと）。だから、車を停めてからこのような階段を歩いてビーチへ降りて行く。なかなか絵になる階段。

サウスヘイブンはミシガン州の南西部にあり、これまた有名なリゾートであるソーガタック(Saugatuck) やオランダ村のようなホランド (Holland) もすぐ近くにある（どちらも車で北へ30~40分ほどの所）。

南の方には、セントジョゼフ(St. Joseph)という町がある(車で40分ほど）。セントジョゼフも良いビーチに恵まれ人気が高い。

これらはみな、シカゴ、インデイアナ方面から近いので（インデイアナ州境にとても近い）、夏にはこの一帯で、イリノイ、インデイアナのナンバープレートの車を多くみかける。

After you park your car, you will have to walk down the stairs to the beach. The street on which you can park your car is on a small bluff. The stairs are nicely painted with no rust – they do a good job on maintenance.

About half-an-hour drive from South Haven is Saugatuck, a very well-known artistic resort.  Also about 40 minutes’ drive from it is Holland, which, as you can guess from the name, is known for the Dutch village.  About 40 min. drive to the south of South Haven is St. Joseph which is very popular for the excellent beaches.

As these towns are all very close to Chicago and Indiana, you see a lot of cars with Illinois and Indiana license plates in the area in summer.

楽しそうだなー。自分が子供時代は、家族でこういうバケーションに行くこともなかったし、第一、私の母は自転車に乗れなかった（！！）　関係ない話でスミマセン。

It must be fun.  When I was a kid in Japan, my family almost never went anywhere in summer, which was totally common in Japan in those days.  And my mother could not ride a bicycle, anyway!!   (sorry for writing about my personal stuff which has nothing to do with this article)

サウスヘイブンのダウンタウン       Downtown of South Haven

目抜き通りはひとつだが、東西結構長く、アメリカの小さな町のダウンタウンとしてはかなり大きな方だろう。空き店舗は見当たらず、いつも人で賑わっているようだ。とかく中西部は、生活に結構余裕があって週末ちょっとどこかに出かけたい（weekend getawayをしたい）人が多い、そういう人達にとってこういうリゾートタウンは格好の場所なのでは、と思う。裏返せば、中西部は遊ぶ所に欠ける（どこも遠すぎる）ので、こういう小さなリゾートタウンでもなければ、退屈でやってられない、ということでもある（と思う）。

There is only one major street in downtown of South Haven, but the street extends long east-west.  South Haven’s downtown is big for a small resort town.  It looks pretty prosperous, always with a good crowd of vacationers. I did not notice any vacant store in the entire downtown. In this part of the Midwest, I feel that there are a lot of people who have money but there is a shortage of fun places to go to.  Living in Michigan, I feel I am so far away from everything – from East Coast, West Coast, Florida, etc. (I’d be happier here if I liked outdoor sports) Probably many Americans are feeling similar. So, people want to come to small resorts like South Haven with a little bit of urban atmosphere and spend money on dining, drinking, etc. there. Without resorts like South Haven, people would go crazy from boredom (this applies more to women, I think).

ブルーベリー専門のお店がダウンタウンにある。その名も「Blueberry Store」。ジャム、プリザーブ、パンケーキミックス、クッキーなどを置いているが、どれもブルーベリーの味、風味で統一されている。プリザーブをひとつ買ってみたが、私個人としては、残念ながら、例によってアメリカによくある単純な砂糖味を感じさせる甘過ぎの味。

サウスヘイブンはブルーベリーの産地で知られている。

８月にはブルーベリーフェステイバルがダウンタウンである (2012年は8月9~12日)。

There is a store in downtown which sells nothing but blueberry products. The name of the store is Blueberry Store, of course. They sell blueberry jam, blueberry preserves, blueberry pancake mix, you name it – all with blueberry tastes and flavor. I bought one jar of blueberry preserve, but alas! again, it was too sugary and too sweet for me…and the taste is too simple… Why do people in the U.S. like such sugary sweetness?

Anyway, the reason there is a store like this is that South Haven is a big bluberry growing area. In August, South Haven hosts an annual blueberry festival in downtown.  This year (2012), it will be 8/9 to 8/12.

ブルーベリーコーヒー豆も売ってたので買ってみた。お味は、というより香りが売り物なのだろう。なかなかイケた。

I bought ground blueberry coffee beans, too.  It was not bad – it did not taste like blueberries, but it had plenty of blueberry aroma.

ダウンタウンを突き抜けて湖の方（西）にちょっと歩くと、ヨット、ボートのマリーナ(marina)。

At the west end of the downtown street is the marina for boats and yachts.

From here they will go out onto Lake Michigan to do fishing or just to hang out there (with beer).

夏はサウスヘイブンのホテルは満員御礼の所が多い、というか、ホテルの数がそもそも少ないので夏はすぐ満杯になるのだが、ビーチハウスやコンドのレンタルを好む米国人が多いのも、ホテルの数が少ない理由のひとつかもしれない。「来年の夏行こう！」と決めたら、早めにホテルに予約を入れておいた方がよい。何せ５〜６月頃から行楽シーズンに入るから。

近年、夏のホテル料金が随分はね上がった感がある。昔はこんなに高くなかった（と思う）。ビーチの人気が高まって来たので、便乗値上げか。

Most of the hotels in South Haven seem completely booked during most of summer, as there is a very limited supply of hotels there. My guess is it’s probably also because many people prefer to rent beach houses and condos. If you decide to go to South Haven next summer, I highly recommend you book a hotel very early.  If I remember correctly, the hotels in and near South Haven did not used to be this expensive even in summer. In fact, many hotels near Lake Michigan beaches have become very expensive in the last 10 years or so, as the Lake Michigan beaches became very popular.

秋〜春はとても静かなのだが、６月くらいからドラゴンボートレースのような夏のイベントが始まり、サウスヘイブンは一気に賑やかになる。

South Haven is quiet from autumn to early spring. It gets pretty busy and crowded from late spring with events like the annual Dragon Boat Race in mid-June.

最低２泊から、夏は３寝室の家の場合、一週間で2000ドル〜5000ドルが今の相場のようだ。週末だけ借りて遊ぶのも人気のようだ（私の息子も友人と数人で、時々、そういうことをして遊んでいる）。何をして遊ぶのかというと、バーベキューを庭でしたり、ビーチに行ったり、ダウンタウンに一緒に出かけたり、映画、テレビを一緒に見たりして遊ぶ。

Looks like the current rates of beach houses are from $2,000 to $5,000 per week.  Usually at least a few nights of stay is required. You can also rent one for a weekend.  One of my sons sometimes does it with several of his friends.

私の前の職場で、サウスヘイブンで一週間バケーションを取った米国人がいた。日本出身の自分なら、一週間も休みを取れるならどこに行こうかと考える場合、思いつくのはカリフォルニアやNYなど、遠方の大都市や大観光地ばかり。サウスヘイブンはまず絶対に頭に浮かばないだろう。その話を聞いた時、この辺で育った米国人の思考回路を思い知った、と思った。

In my previous workplace, there was an American lady who took a one-week summer vacation in South Haven. An idea of spending a whole week in South Haven would never occur to me. When I do vacation planning, I would think of going somewhere far away, like California, New York – all famous sightseeing places and big cities.  That’s very Japanese. I am very Japanese no matter how long I live here.  I was very struck by the choice the American lady made.  Obviously her concept of a good vacation was very different from mine.

そして、一週間も、毎日何をするのだろう？　観光地を毎日セカセカと旺盛に回って旅行するのが休暇という考えが頭に染みついている私のような人間にはなかなか分からないのだが、日頃読めない本を何冊か読破したり、友人を招いて一緒に時間を過ごしたり、とにかく一週間、のーんびりと、日常とは全く違う時間を過ごすのだそうだ。それがバカンスというもの。ふーん、なるほど！　最初にそれを聞いた時は、「でも、一週間もそんなこと、やっぱり退屈で自分には耐えられない」と思ったものだが、最近は、そういうのもいいかも、と思うようになってきた。

I was curious what the American lady did in South Haven for one week.  To imagine it is very hard for somebody like me who grew up in Japan with the culture that a vacation means you go on a trip somewhere famous far away and see as many things as possible in a limited time.  For some (or many?) Americans, summer vacations mean they rent a beach house or a waterfront condo with their family and read a few books which they have been too busy to do, lie on a beach for hours, etc. – just take it easy, do nothing, spend time in a totally different way from their hectic daily life.  When I first learned that, I thought I would never be able to do it.  But as I have lived in the U.S. longer, I am beginning to be able to see how appealing it is for Americans and I am feeling more like trying a vacation like that sometime myself.
