ギャロップパーク (Gallop Park) はアナーバーのバルビゾンだ!

Gallop Park (in Ann Arbor, Michigan) reminds me of Barbizon.

バルビゾンとは、19世紀のフランスで自然主義画家のミレー(Millet)、コロー(Corot)などが集まった有名な村 。

Barbizon is the famous village in France where the realism artists such as Millet and Corot gathered in the 19th century.

かなりキザだなあ。

大学でかじった少々の知識をshow off（私は一応、美術史専攻の生徒だったのだ )。

I majored in art history undergraduate in college. So, I know a little more than most people even though I was never a good student.

ギャロップパークは、アナーバーで一番人気の公園。 ギャロップパークに画家が集まっているわけではないが（画家ではなく釣り人が集まってくるようだ）、ここを散歩するたびに、大学時代に読まされた美術史の本の中の、バルビゾンについての写真入りのページを思い出してしまうのだ。実際にバルビゾンに行ったことはないのだが、読んだ本や、（特に）コローの森の絵を思い出して、勝手に「似ている！」といつも感心している。興味ある方、Google Image (http://www.google.com/imghp?hl=en&tab=ii) で Corotで検索してごらんなさい。私の言っている意味が分かるでしょう。

Gallop Park is the most popular park in Ann Arbor. It does not seem to particularly attract artists; it seems to attract plenty of fishermen.  Every time I take a walk in this park, I remember one of the textbooks on art history I had to read in college, particularly the chapter about the Barbizon artists with Corot’s paintings. I have never been to Barbizon, but (for no reason) I am so sure that Gallop Park resembles Barbizon (rather, it resembles the forests Corot painted).  If you are curious, go to Google Image and search Corot (http://www.google.com/imghp?hl=en&tab=ii).  You should know what I am talking about!

ギャロップパークは、Huron Riverの北岸と南岸に沿って３マイル以上のtrailsがあり、その殆どはアスファルトだが、北東の部分だけマルチ（木片）を敷き詰められた道となっている（上の写真）。 私はこのマルチの道が一番好きで、バルビゾンを一番思わせるのはこの道だ。 いつも、コロー（Corot）の絵を思い出してしまう 。 　マルチが敷き詰めてあり、歩きやすい。

Gallop Park has trail of over 3 miles along Huron River .  The trail goes on both the north and south sides of the river with the bridges connecting the north and the south. Most of the trail is paved, but the northeast part is covered with wood mulch.  I like this part the best, and this is what always reminds me of Barbizon and Corot’s paintings.  It’s very comfortable to walk on wood mulch.

You will see this pond on the left side of the wood mulch trail if you walk clockwise.  Beautiful in every season.

Many people walk their dogs here.

A swan speeding – where in a hurry?

白鳥が増えた。 以前よりかなり増えたように思う。 ときどき水面下に頭を突っ込みエサをゲットしようとしているのを見かける。 シッポとお尻と足だけが水面上に出て、空に向かって直立して、なんともユーモラスである。 本人は大まじめで必死で生活しようとしているのだろうが。

We see many swans – There did not used to be this many before.  Sometimes you will see their heads under the water with their butts and legs standing straight above the water.  They are trying to catch food. They must be very serious, but very humorous scenes.

Huron Riverは、アナーバーにとって貴重な水源 。

Huron River is the very important water source for Ann Arbor.

森の中に家が１件。 もう随分昔からあるようだが、未だに誰の家なのか知らず。 冬、枯れ木になると家の全容が明らかになる。大邸宅だ。

If you look closely, can you see a red house in the middle of the woods?  Whose house is that?  It’s been there for a long time. In winter you can see the entire house with the leaves fallen – it’s a huge mansion.

日本の滋賀県彦根市とアナーバーは姉妹都市だ。その記念石がこの公園にある。 （なぜ彦根市なのか。それは、アナーバー市内にHikone St. という通りがあるからだ。なお、これは「ハイコーン」と読む。なお、残念なことに、Hikone St. はあまり良いご近所ではない。。）

Ann Arbor and Hikone in Japan are sister cities.  The reason why they became sister cities is that there is a street named Hikone in Ann Arbor.  As far as I remember, it was not recommendable to visit Hikone St. though. I don’t know about now.

Bench donated in memory of somebody (not famous).  There are a lot like this in any park. I never saw a donated bench like this in my home country.  I think it’s a neat idea. 橋を超えると、右手に子供の遊び場が、左手にはピクニック会場（屋根つき）、バレーボールコートなど。

Beyond the bridge, there is a playground on the right and a picnic shelter on the left.

ギャロップパークの一帯が14,000〜13,000年前の氷河時代にどんな風だったかの説明が公園内にある。（風雨にさらされ、だいぶ薄汚れてきたなあ）

There is a sign explaining what it was like in the Ice Age, 14,000 – 13,000 years ago.  This sign is getting very worn out by winds and rain.

14,000年前、氷河はまだ多く残っていたが、氷河のクレバスに氷河の溶けた水が流れ、土砂や石が水流で流されてきた。それらが層を成しケイム（kame: 急な斜面の丘）を形成。

It’s hard to read – I think it says “very much of the glacier was still present  14,000 years ago. Crevasses within the glacier were filed with meltwaters carrying sand, rock, and gravel. These materials sorted into layers, called outwash and formed kames”.

Huron Riverがアナーバーを通り抜けて、Lake Erieまで流れる様子を図解したもの。こういうの、気をつけて見ると、なかなか見て面白い。

It illustrates Huron River flows through Ann Arbor all the way to Lake Erie.  Very interesting to read these signs.

さて、サインを読み終わったら左手に進む。

雨でもピクニックができるシェルターが。

OK, enough reading the signs.  Proceed to the left and find a shelter where you can picnic even if it rains.
ネットが乱れたままのバレーボールコート ここで昔、息子のボーイスカウトのピクニックがあった。サッカーやソフトボールをここで、親子入り乱れてプレーした。 今でも、通りかかるたびに、いろんなグループが同じ場所でいろんな遊びに興じているのを目にして、うれしく思う。

A public volleyball court.  Somebody please fix the net.  One of my sons was in Boy Scout, and the Boy Scouts and their parents had a picnic here.  The boys and the parents played soccer, softball, etc. together.  I am happy to see younger generations of people playing group sports here whenever I walk in this park.

この公園は、いつも、ガチョウ (geese)がやたら多い。人をなめたような太々しい態度が、時々腹立つ。 あまりの多さに、公園の散歩道は時として、ガチョウのフンだらけになった時代があったが、最近は、管理局が清掃に力を入れているのだろうか、あまり目にしなくなった。　 人間は自分たちを絶対に攻撃しない、と信じ込んでいるフシがある。何を根拠にそんなに人間を信用できるのかよく分からないが、 それを悪用（？）してガチョウを殺してご飯のおかずにする人もいそうだ（現にそうした人を私は知ってる）。

There have always been so many geese in Gallop Park. They have this annoying attitude that they are not afraid of people at all. They sometimes get on my nerve!  They seem to be so sure that people will never hurt them. On what grounds?  I actually know somebody who took advantage of it and killed and ate some geese.  For some years in the past, the trails in Gallop Park got so filled with their droppings that we could not walk without watching our steps, but now the city must be doing a good job – the trails are clean and nice again.

South side of Huron River.  There is the Amtrak train track to the left. 右上に通るはHuron Parkway の橋。 中央は川の真ん中の小島。1968年にここが洪水に襲われ、その後水位が低下した結果、この小島ができた、と公園内の説明板に書いてある。この小島はいろんな水鳥の楽園のようだ。

The bridge above is Huron Parkway. The island in the center is in the middle of Huron River. This area was flooded in 1968.  After the flood, the water level went down and the islands were formed. These islands are paradises for water fowls and birds.

バルビゾンに似ていると書いたが、東洋的な感じもする、と言えば、支離滅裂？

I said this park resembles Barbizon, but I also feel this park looks Asian.  Am I making no sense?

駐車エリアは、多いとは言えないが、独立記念日などの人気の祭日でない限り、満杯ということはまずない。

You can’t say this park has ample parking space, but you will find a spot unless it’s a big holiday like the Fourth of July.

一方通行の橋 (One Lane Bridge) あなたが公園の中央入口から入ってきたなら、すぐに小さな駐車エリアがあるが、そこはすぐ満杯になるので、そこを諦めてこの橋を渡る可能性は高い。一度に一方向しか車が渡れない。

One-lane bridge – if you enter the park from the main entrance, you will drive through this bridge.  If a car is coming from the other side, you will have to wait until the car passes the bridge.

One Lange Bridgeのすぐ横に、西に入って行く細道がある。 この細道は、Furstenberg Nature Areaと Nicole Arboretum (the Arb) へとつながっている。

There is a path westbound right next to the one-lane bridge.  This path leads to Furstenberg Nature Area and the famous Nicole Arboretum (the Arb).

You can see Furstenberg Nature Area is Gallop Park’s next door neighbor on the west side.

Furstenberg Nature Area内に、このBoardwalk（木道）がめぐらされている。木道のすぐ下は沼湿地。 やっぱり、この風景、バルビゾンを連想させるなー。

There are boardwalks all over in the Furstenberg Nature Area.  Underneath the boardwalks is the wetland.  Yes, this photo reminds me again of Barbizon…

プレーリー、サバンナ、湿地と、いろんな種類の土地がこの小さな公園の中に混在しているそうだ。面白い！

Turn around and exit Furstenberg and be back on the trail of Gallop Park.

右手に、カヌー、カヤックなどのレンタルをできるGallop Park Livery (ボートの乗り場とでも訳す？)　が見えてくる。 paddleboats は、手でこぐのではなく、足でペダルを踏んで進むボート。写真右手に見える水色のものがそれ。子供は大抵これが好きだ。 このLiveryのウエブサイトは、http://www.michigan.org/Property/Detail.aspx?p=G15916

Kayaks after somebodies’ use?  They have a lot for rental.

There is a cafe at the Livery.  They have patio tables outside in spring – autumn.

The cafe sells goodies including Ann Arbor’s famous Zingerman’s coffees, brownies, etc.

ハロウィンの催しもののPRポスター。　 マシュマロを焚き火にあぶっている絵のこのポスター、アメリカ人の子供時代のエッセンスのような絵だと思う。私の子供達も、こういうことをしたものだ。なぜマシュマロ？　と私は分からなかったが、とにかく、アメリカの子供はマシュマロなのだ。アメリカで育つなら、必ず子供時代に一度は、マシュマロをたき火であぶって食べるものだ。

私はこの絵をひどく気に入り、毎年このポスターを貼ってほしいと思っている。 この公園では野外でいろんな戸外の催し物がある。 一度は、女性のグループが創作ダンスを試みているのを見たことがある。

The bulletin board at the Livery. I really like the poster with the picture of marshmallows roasted in campfire. I feel it captures the essence of American childhood. My kids did it, too.  I could not understand for a while, “why marshmallow?”   But if you grow up in America, you will have to do this at least once in your childhood!

I wish they will put up the same poster here every year.  There are many outdoor activities in Gallop Park, both for kids and adults.  Once I saw a group of women trying creative dancing outdoors in this park.

Huron Riverがダムのおかげでせき止められて池のようになり、それに沿ってギャロップパークができたことがひと目で分かる。

Huron River was dammed up which caused the river to form a pond-like shape which is now Gallop Park – I see!

ギャロップパークは、ギャロップ(Gallop) さんというアナーバーの公園の責任者だった人の名前から来たものだった。1958年のこと。 1968年に洪水が発生。ダムが洪水で押し流された。洪水の後、水が引き、水位が下がって地形が変形した結果できたのが、現在のギャロップパークの形らしい。

Did you know Gallop Park was named after Ms. Gallop who was the superintendent of Ann Arbor park?  It was formed back in 1968 when the area was flooded.  The islands in the river are the result of the flood.

ギャロップパークのtrailは全長3.25マイル。かなり長いtrailだと言える。。

Gallop Park trail extends over 3.25 miles.  It’s a pretty long trail.

「蝶とハミングバードの庭 (Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden」というのもある。公園の入口から左手に歩いて行くと左側に、ひっそりとある。小さなお庭だが、いろんな種類の花が咲き乱れ、ほんとに蝶々が花から花へと舞っている、秘密の花園！

On the north side of the park, there is this small, quiet, and beautiful garden – Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden. Various kinds of beautiful flowers are in bloom in harmony.  Butterflies are really flying all over in this garden.  My Secret Garden…

アナーバーのロータリークラブのおかげでできたものらしい。

It was founded by the rotary club of Ann Arbor – nice!

ギャロップパークにはもうひとつ入口がある。ボートやカヤックを自分たちで持ってくる人達のための入口だ。正門がHuron Parkwayの西側にあるのに対し、この入口は東側。ここは空いていて、いつ行っても駐車が楽々。

Gallop Park has two entrances.  This is not the main one.  If you want to bring your own boat, canoe, and/or kayak, you want to come in from this entrance, which is located to the east of Huron Parkway.  The main entrance is to the west of Huron Pkwy.  I don’t own a boat or anything, but I usually park my car here.  The parking is never full here.

You get out your car, unload your boat or canoe or kayak, and then there is the place right there you can launch it in the water.

ギャロップパークは、アナーバーの宝石のようなもの。

Gallop Park is Ann Arbor’s gem.

街中にありながら、街中であることを忘れてしまう自然豊かな公園。 大学に近いことから、留学生やその家族が多く憩いに来る。

It is in the middle of the city, but you forget you are inside a city.  Very relaxing.  There are many foreign students and their families strolling in the park, because it is very close to the U of M campus.

クリーンなんだけども、何か、あんまりキチンとしていないところがあって、いかにも、アナーバーのヒッピー的雰囲気がにじみ出ている気がする（アナーバーは1960~70年代、ヒッピーのメッカ的場所だったそうだ）。

The park is clean and well managed, but somehow you fee loose atmosphere exists in there. Maybe because it’s in the once-hippie town, Ann Arbor (Ann Arbor was a big hippie town in 1960s – 1970s).

さて、行き方だが、これをここまで読んでくださった方は、すでにアナーバーの地理には詳しいだろうから、特に書きません。US-23を Geddes Rdでおりて、 Geddes Rdを西に向かえば必ずこの公園に行き着く。Huron High School がGeddes Rdと Huron Parkwayの交差点にあるが、Huron High の向かい側がこの公園の正門入口です。

Finally, driving directions to Gallop Park – I am not going into details, because if you have read this post this far, you must live around here and know how to get there.  Anyway, the best way is to get off US-23 at Geddes Rd, and take Geddes westbound to the intersection with Huron Parkway.  There is Huron High School at the intersection, and the main entrance of Gallop Park is across Geddes Rd from Huron High.
