ミシガン州の南部を東西に走るI-94沿いに、ポーポー（Paw Paw） という小さな町がある。ポーポーとは印象的かつ不思議な名前だなあ、この辺によくあるように北米インデイアンの名前かな、と昔から思っていたのだが、その名の由来は、実はPaw Pawという名前の果物だということが、最近分かった。でも今回はワインについての記事なので、詳しいことはまた別の機会に。

さて、このPaw Pawという町に、２つのワイナリーがある。

ワーナー(Warner) とセントジュリアン(St. Julian) だ。

There is a small town named Paw Paw along I-94 which runs across southern Michigan.  I always wondered where this name came from. I thought it’s probably a North America Indian’s name, as there are so many cities and towns with Indian names.  But recently I found out that the name of the town came from fruits named Paw Paw. I will write about fruits Paw Paw later – this post is about wine!

There are two wineries in Paw Paw – Warner and St. Julian.

St. Julianは巨大なワインメーカーで、このボトルはどこのお店に行っても必ずお目にかかる。

Warnerの方はずっと小規模で、St. Julianが年間20万本の出荷なのに対して、Warnerは約4万5千本程だそうだ。

私の住むデトロイト近郊でさえも、Warnerのワインにはお目にかかれない。ごく限定されたお店、または試飲の出店（Tasting room）でしか手に入らないとのこと。

10月のある日、このWarner Wineryに立ち寄ってみた。

St. Julian is a big wine maker.  We see their wine everywhere.  Warner is much smaller.  I heard that St. Julian ships out 200,000 bottles a year, while Warner ships out about 45,000 bottles a year.  Even in metro-Detroit in the same state where I live, I do not see Warner’s wine – because their wine is sold only in a small number of certain stores and tasting rooms.

On an autumn day in October, I visited Warner Winery.

ワイナリーは、結構車の往来が激しい道路(Kalamazoo St)にある。

Warner Winery is on Kalamazoo St. in Paw Paw.  This street has pretty heavy traffic.

ここですぐ左に入ると駐車場がある。

You turn left at the sign, then there is the parking lot for Warner customers.

車から降りると、Warner Wineryの瀟洒なレンガの建物が眼前に。

From the parking lot, you will see the beautiful brick building. That’s Warner Winery.

小川がすぐ傍を流れる。

騒々しい通りがウソのように、たちまち閑静な空間に入り込む。

There is a small creek along the winery.  It’s a very quiet and secluded small world,  separate from the busy street.

入口の方へ向かう。

橋を渡り終え、入口へ近づく。

Cross the bridge, then you will see a historical sign in the middle of the brick road.

Hausという単語を使っているところを見ると、ちょっとした歴史館気取り？

Warner wineryはミシガン州で２番目に古いワイナリーだそうだ（このサインには書いてないが）。1938年に、ワーナーさんとターナーさんが共同創始したとのこと。

この建物は1898年築、ミシガン州に歴史的建築物として指定されているそうだ。

もともとこの場所は、19世紀、ポーポー村の上水道施設だったのを（川がすぐそこに流れているから、納得）、Warner wineryが1967年に買い取ったらしい。

It says it is designated by the state as a historical structure.  That’s why they have this sign. This sign does not mention it, but I learned that Warner Winery is the second oldest winery in Michigan.

左手を見ると、Grand Trunk Railroadという今はもうない鉄道の、1914年ものの汽車の車体が。

Grand Trunk Railroadとは、19世紀半ば〜1920年代初頭までカナダ、米国北東部、五大湖地方にあった鉄道会社。

この車体を借り切ってパーテイが出来るそうだ。イキなアイデア。楽しそう！

On the left, there is an old train car – it’s a 1914 railroad passenger rail car of Grand Trunk Railroad company which used to operate in this region from mid-19th century to early 1920s.  You can rent this car for a private party – that should be fun.

テーブルに座っての試飲もできるようだ。この日は週日で午前中だったので、誰もいなかった。

You can do wine tasting at these tables, too.  There was nobody as it was Monday morning.

左手にはKalamazoo St. が走り、車の騒音が結構するので、ここでの試飲はちょっとうるさく感じるかも。

It may be a little too noisy out here – too close to the busy Kalamazoo Street.  You can even see cars on the street from here.

右手にいよいよ、建物への入口が。

ちょっとためらう客も、これなら思わずつい入って行きそう。

Looks very inviting.  You won’t feel intimidated to go in there.

他にお客がいなかったのもあって、このワイナリーの歴史についていろいろ話してくれた。

I tasted two kinds of red wine (for free, of course).

I was the only customer.  The lady spent a lot of time for me to explain about the history of the winery.

現在は、創始者ワーナーさんの３代目の４人の兄弟姉妹が共同経営しているとのこと。ここから約50マイル北にあるところにブドウ畑を持つ。

以前は大きな建物をここに所有し、ここでワインを作っていたそうだ。建物内でのワイン作り見学ツアーもやってたらしい。ところが、従業員のタバコの不始末で火事となり全焼。大きなビルを再建するのは経済的に意味をなさないと保険会社からアドバイスを受け、ビルの再建はやめ、ワイン作りは別の所で行うようになったとのこと。St. Julianワイナリーの建物が同じ通りのすぐ傍にあるが、そこの建物は以前はWarnerの所有だった、とも言っていたが、早口で説明され、メモも録音も取らなかったので、ほんとにそう言ったのか100％確信がない。また今度行った時に、聞きなおしてみよう。

The current owners are the 4 siblings who are the 3rd generation of Warner. They own vineyards about 50 miles to north from here.

They used to own a big building here and made wine in the building.  They used to offer winery tours, but the building got burnt down due to the fire caused by one of the employees’ cigarette.  They did not rebuild a building as the insurance company advised that it would not be worth doing it.  The lady also explained, I believe, that they also used to own the building nearby on the same street, which St. Julian now occupies, but I am not totally sure if she really said that, as she talked so fast (I am not a native English speaker, so I don’t have complete oral comprehension sometimes) and I did not record what she said.  I will ask them again about it when I visit them next time.

２本の試飲のうち、やっぱり、高い方のが美味しかったので、18ドルも出して高い方（上の写真）のワインを１本購入してしまった。ああー、予算をまたオーバー〜〜

このクリスマスにあける予定（今から胸がワクワク）

I tasted the most inexpensive red wine and the more expensive red wine.  To no surprise, the more expensive one tasted way better, so I ended up paying $18 for the more expensive one.  I exceeded my budget again….

I will open this wine with my family this Christmas.  I am counting the days until Christmas…!

ところで、ライバルのSt. Julian が同じ通りのすぐお隣にある。

Warner wineryでワインを買い、メルヘンチックなお庭を散策していい気持ちになり、通りに出て少し南に歩くと、このSt. Julian Parkingがすぐにあった。

サインがしゃれている。

Warner’s competitor, St. Julian, is also on the same street – in fact almost next door to Warner.  Feeling good after wine-tasting and walking in the serene and pretty garden, I came out to the busy Kalamazoo Street.  I walked on the street a little towards south.  Then this very entertaining St. Julian’s parking sign appeared on the right.

I passed the parking sign.  Then there is a huge building on the right.  That is St. Julian Winery.  This is the main entrance.

アルカポネのような。。。（失礼！）と思ったら、アルカポネと同じ時代の人である。このワイナリーも、1930年代からこの町にある老舗。

建物内でワイン作りをしており、見学ツアーがあるらしいが、大きな建物なので疲れてしまうような気がして、今回はやめた。。。また今度来た時に。

On the exterior wall there is a picture of the founder of St. Julian, Mariano Meconi.  For a second, I thought it’s Al Capone …(sorry!).  No wonder. He lived in the same era as Capone.  Men in that era all dressed like that.  St. Julian is also old – this winery was started here in 1930s.

I heard that they make wine inside the building and they offer tours.  I was already a little tired after visiting Warner, so I passed on a tour that day.  Next time.

ひとつ文句があると言えば、このKalamazoo St.。車の往来が激しくて、ちょっといただけない。ワイナリーというものは、やはり、のどかな田舎にあってほしいなあと思う。

One complaint – this street, Kalamazoo St. is too busy.  People drive like maniac (like on any main street). I wish the wineries were in a more rural area.

ところで、Warnerのワインが飲めるというレストランが道路（Kalamazoo St.）の反対側にある。Gallagher’s Restaurant（写真）だ。この町を通りすがることがあったら、ここで食事をしながらワーナーのワインを頼むのもいいかも。

ワーナーのワインは、少量カリフォルニアにも出回っているが、ミシガン州内への出荷が殆ど。その他、試飲の出店とごく限られたレストランで飲めるくらいだから、（他の小さなワイナリーもそうだが）貴重品なのだ。

Warner wine is served in a few restaurants.  This restaurant, Gallagher’s, across the street from the winery, is one of them. It may be fun to stop by here and have lunch or dinner with Warner wine if you happen to travel this area.

Warner wine is mainly distributed inside Michigan with a small quantity distributed on the West Coast.  And in Michigan it’s available only in limited locations, which makes their wine precious (that’s a characteristic of  small wineries).

I-94  をexit 60で下り、北へ進む。５分もしないうちに左手にある。

How to get to Warner Winery:  Exit 60 of I-94.  Go north on Kalamazoo St.  In less than five minutes, you will see the sign on the left.

なお、このPaw Pawという町では、９月にワインフェステイバルがあるそうだ。

秋は、いろんなところでビール祭りやワイン祭りが催されるが、この町もそのひとつ。私は行ったことはないのだけど。
